Lord of the Rings extended editions theater
All 3 Lord of the Rings Extended Editions Return to Theaters

Prepare for an epic return to Middle-earth. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, Fathom Events will bring all three Lord of the Rings extended editions back to theaters. This special two-weekend event arrives in January 2026. However, be warned: you’ll need to clear your schedule for the famously long director’s cuts.

When and How to Watch

The theatrical re-release will span two weekends with different formats:

  • Weekend 1 (January 16-18, 2026): Screenings in DBOX motion format.
  • Weekend 2 (January 23-25, 2026): Screenings in standard theater format.

Fortunately, Fathom is staggering the films. Consequently, you cannot watch all three back-to-back in a single day. This is a wise choice, as a full marathon would demand nearly 12 hours of screen time.

The Epic Runtimes

These screenings feature the complete extended journeys, not the shorter theatrical cuts. Therefore, prepare for these epic runtimes:

  • The Fellowship of the Ring: 3 hours, 48 minutes (228 minutes)
  • The Two Towers: 3 hours, 55 minutes (235 minutes)
  • The Return of the King: 4 hours, 23 minutes (263 minutes)

Special Theater Merchandise

The event also includes exclusive collectibles. According to reports, AMC theaters will offer a popcorn bucket featuring a map of Middle-earth. Meanwhile, Regal theaters will sell a bucket styled after the One Ring.

‘The Hunt for Gollum’

This re-release arrives as Warner Bros. prepares a new Middle-earth film. The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release in December 2027. Andy Serkis will direct the film and also reprise his iconic role as Gollum. The story explores the period between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, focusing specifically on the search for the Ring.

While the studio has not finalized casting, actors like Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) and Elijah Wood (Frodo) have expressed openness to returning. Additionally, Orlando Bloom (Legolas) has shown interest, though he noted the potential need for digital de-aging technology. The production team plans to begin filming in New Zealand in 2026.

A Middle-earth Moment

Ultimately, this re-release is a major event for fans. It offers a rare chance to experience Peter Jackson’s complete vision on the big screen. With the extended editions’ return and a new film on the horizon, the journey through Middle-earth is far from over. So, mark your calendars and prepare for an unforgettable cinematic adventure.
