Andrew Scott Elsinore
Andrew Scott Cast in Elsinore as Gay Actor Ian Charleson

Fleabag and The Stranger actor Andrew Scott has been cast in the upcoming film Elsinore, which will tell the remarkable story of Ian Charleson, the late actor best known for his role in Chariots of Fire. Scott will portray Charleson as he prepares for what would become his most iconic performance — Hamlet in the National Theatre’s 1990 production.

Charleson, who gained international acclaim for playing Olympic athlete Eric Liddell in the 1981 Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire, was diagnosed with HIV in 1986. He tragically passed away at the age of 40 from AIDS-related complications, just two months after his acclaimed performance in Hamlet. Despite the secrecy surrounding HIV at the time, Charleson made the bold decision to publicly acknowledge AIDS as the cause of his death, becoming one of the first prominent figures in the UK to do so.

In a poignant tribute, Charleson’s close friend and fellow actor Ian McKellen described his Hamlet performance as nothing short of miraculous. McKellen noted that Charleson performed despite undergoing “punishing medical treatment” and suffering from physical impairments due to his illness. His dedication and passion for his craft left a lasting legacy.

Following Charleson’s death, the Ian Charleson Awards were established in 1991 to honor the best classical stage performances in the UK by actors under the age of 30, a testament to his impact on the theatre world.

Elsinore boasts an impressive cast alongside Scott, including Olivia Colman, who reunites with him from Fleabag, playing Charleson’s doctor. Heartstopper star Joe Locke, Doctor Who’s Billie Piper, Ripley actor Johnny Flynn, and Bridgerton’s Monica Dolan are also part of the ensemble. Additional cast members include Bend It Like Beckham’s Juliet Stevenson, Sherwood’s Adeel Akhtar, The Testament of Ann Lee’s Matthew Beard, The Last Kingdom’s David Dawson, and Slow Horses’s Kadiff Kirwan, among others.

Simon Stone, an acclaimed Australian film and theatre director, will direct Elsinore, with the script written by BAFTA winner and Golden Globe nominee Stephen Beresford, known for his work on Pride. Filming is set to begin next week, though a release date has yet to be announced.

This biographical film promises to be a powerful tribute to Ian Charleson’s legacy, celebrating both his artistic contributions and his courage in the face of illness.
