Elijah Wood Hints at Frodo’s Return in The Hunt for Gollum

Elijah Wood has fueled speculation about his return as Frodo Baggins in the upcoming live-action film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Appearing at Fan Expo New Orleans, Wood was asked about his involvement in the highly anticipated film, and while he stopped short of confirming his participation, he left fans with plenty to wonder about.

When asked directly if he would reprise his iconic role, Wood responded, “I can neither confirm nor deny.” He then added, “Listen, a wizard is to be trusted,” referencing Ian McKellen, the beloved actor who portrayed Gandalf the Grey in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. By evoking McKellen, Wood appeared to hint at his involvement, though he never outright confirmed it.

This playful exchange followed earlier comments by McKellen himself, who hinted at Frodo’s presence in The Hunt for Gollum without giving away too much. McKellen teased, “There’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s another character called Gandalf,” but stopped short of providing further details.

While the film’s plot remains largely under wraps, fans can be certain that Andy Serkis will return as Gollum. Serkis, known for his groundbreaking motion capture performance as the troubled Hobbit, is not only reprising his role but will also direct the live-action film. This marks his directorial debut in the Lord of the Rings universe, following his iconic performances as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

“I’m excited for Andy to direct it,” Wood said at the panel. “It feels so unbelievably appropriate that he directs a film about his character that he has really made his own. I’m thrilled. It’ll be great.”

The Hunt for Gollum takes place during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, filling in a gap between Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday and the Fellowship’s journey into the Mines of Moria. The film’s creative team includes Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou.

For Wood, returning to the Lord of the Rings franchise, even in a small capacity, is a thrilling prospect. “It’s very much that core original group getting back together to tell this story,” he said. “It will feel like a really fun exploration of this character that we all love so much.”

Fans of the series are eagerly awaiting more details, especially as Wood’s cryptic response only fuels the anticipation of Frodo’s return.
